    thanks for explaining the angled tone holes, as a non-bassoon woodwind player i've been looking at these instruments wondering how holes in those positions could possibly produce the range of pitches... i thought it might be something like that, was cool to hear it confirmed! also the playing was beautiful!

    Dare I say it! Apollo is a Stalker! Even as Dafne sings of loving "la libertà" he pursues her with godlike arrogance and entitlement. His manipulations and threats increase; she becomes angry and afraid. She calls him a profane God, even "no God." Even after her only escape, to become a Laurel plant, he still seizes her to adorn his unrepentant brow!!

    Also, Beethoven's low voicings don't sound grumbly - they have more clarity on a fortepiano than on a modern instrument. And the passages where the hands are widely separated have more sonority because the lower strings emphasize lower partials.

    Thank you EMV. Your current information video about the construction and comparison of early fortepianos and specifically the Graf fortepiano is super informative and much appreciated. This kind of video is such a rarity. When I was young one of my favourite International pianists was a famous Russian, Vladamir Sofronitsky. When I finally got a computer I went looking for him on the Internet to see if his Record albums were available I found that they were. In the process I discovered that he had a daughter, Viviana Sofronitsky who is also a concert virtuoso. I was immediately interested in who she was and searched to see if she had any albums. That's when I discovered she was married to Paul McNulty and the first recording I found of Viviana was of her playing the Moonlight Sonata on a replica 1805, Walter and Sohn forte piano. Her breathtaking artistry drew me in in a heartbeat and that's how I began to learn about replica pianos and specifically Paul McNulty's replica pianos. Pretty quickly it became clear that Viviana was a driving force in recognizing Paul's special talent. Being a genuine virtuoso in music, Viviana understood that Paul was a virtuoso builder of fine instruments and between the two of them they have given the world the genuine sound of piano music/speech as is was heard over two hundred years ago. Now, we get to hear what music sounded like to Mozart and Beethoven, it's exactly the same as what they heard. Paul McNulty has made a couple of hundred pianos but its taken him many years to accomplish that and no matter how much longer he can continue to make pianos his final output will still be a small number so the EMV is truly blessed and ahead of the crowd to have had the wisdom of purchasing one of his magnificent pianos. Clearly, these are expensive instruments but they are going to become a great deal more expensive. It has to be understood that these pianos are virtually identical to the original pianos. The videos that EMV has produced of the Graf piano are a true window in time. Unfortunately, the EMV doesn't yet own a replica of a Mozart piano as far as I know but videos showcasing the Mozart, McNulty replicas can be found at McNulty Fortepianos. I hope the EMV will continue to showcase artists performing on their Graf piano. Thank you.

There are wonderful concerts with the Graf being booked for 2025 and 2026 so I hope you will be pleased when we can reveal what those are. There is a Walter piano on which to play Mozart at the University of British Columbia. Someday it would be wonderful to have an earlier piano made by Paul McNulty. Thank you for your interest. Beethoven wrote the sonata about 1801. Do you think he ever played it on a Graf piano? I think he didn't own a Graf piano until the late 1820s by which time he had serious hearing difficulties. Do you happen to know which piano Beethoven was using in 1801 when the sonata was first composed? I think the sonata sounds wonderful on this magnificent replica of a Graf piano and of course, you play the sonata beautifully. Thank you for playing for us.

    • @EarlyMusicVancouver
      @EarlyMusicVancouver 4 месяца назад

      Thank you for your comment. This reply is from the artist herself, Mélisande McNabney. "Thank you for your nice comment! Yes you are absolutely right, Beethoven would have composed Op. 27 no.2 on his Walter 5-octave piano. As a historically informed performer, I allow for some flexibility in the stance I take. If I approach the piece from the perspective of the composer creating the work, I would play it on a Walter. This perspective is extremely interesting, but it does mean you need as many as 7 different fortepianos to play all of Beethoven's sonatas, which are not always at hand. You might even need two different pianos for one single sonata (fortepianist Tom Beghin makes an excellent point that the Hammerklavier was written on two different pianos, Streicher and Broadwood: hdl.handle.net/1813/111270) In the present performance, playing on EMV's beautiful Graf, I approached the piece from a socio-historical perspective. I imagine that I am, say, a viennese woman in her forties, and have just received a new fortepiano by Conrad Graf, perhaps bought for my daughter who is also a pianist. As I sit down at the instrument with some nostalgia, I start playing my favorite sonata, which I had learned in my youth... Did Beethoven ever play this sonata on his Graf? Maybe, maybe not, but many people in the general public must have done so at home!"

    • @mabdub
      @mabdub 4 месяца назад

      Thank you for your response. Of course, there would have been people who heard and played music on older instruments and then later on graduated to better pianos like the Graf. I'm sure there must have even been people during Beethoven's lifetime who played the Moonlight Sonata on the special double strug piano that Graf made especially for Beethoven. I've been following the resurgence of interest in period pianos for a few years and have made a point to watch videos of the first and second Warsaw competitions on period instruments. Paul McNulty's replica pianos have been an interest of mine for the last couple of decades. Until I first heard his replications I thought actual period pianos sounded the way they do becasue they were old, it didn't occur to me that they sounded like that when they were new and that their sound hadn't really changed all that much from when they were first made many generations ago. It was a revelation for me. I've developed a kind of addiction to the beautiful sound of period pianos and that includes Paul McNulty's copies. I'm so happy that EMV was able to purchase one of his special instruments. @@EarlyMusicVancouver

      @mabdub, just a quick note to say that we have another new video coming out this week that features Mélisande speaking about our Graf copy by Paul McNulty. She takes us through the characteristics of the fortepiano, in comparison with harpsichord and the modern piano, and speaks about the sound of the Graf. This video will be released on Tuesday, March 12. Please do come back and let us know what you think!
